February is National Heart Month - Is it the Plumbing?
We are happy to share the third in a series of articles written by Karen Radtke, MSN, APN. In addition to her nursing credentials, she is also a Board Certified Health Coach, with over 18 years experience in various healthcare settings, including primary care and chronic disease management.
Heart Health: Is it the Plumbing?
Startling results were recently released from the Myocardial Infarction Study. In tracking over 500,000 people with heart disease, shockingly, 75% of patients who suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack), had NORMAL LDL (bad) cholesterol.
For over 40 years, doctors and patients alike have been obsessed with lowering cholesterol, and believed that if a person ate too much saturated fat (think T-bone steak), plaque would gradually build up more and more inside one's blood vessels. Eventually--like the plumbing in your house--the vessel is completely blocked and you have a heart attack.
Many cardiologists now believe this is only PART of the problem, and a much bigger concern is SUGAR!!
In an effort to supposedly "help" people eat healthier by reducing unhealthy fat in their diets, the food industry responded by creating and promoting more processed foods that are loaded with sugar and "hidden" sugar.
According to Dr. Aseem Malhotra, a leading cardiologist, this has contributed to an obesity epidemic. Based on numerous large-scale research studies, he believes that high sugar intake is an independent risk factor for chronic disease, particularly heart disease.
So what's the SOLUTION?
One piece to the puzzle is eating a whole food plant-strong diet which emphasizes fruit and vegetables, and minimizes processed foods.
So what's the NEXT STEP?
If YOU have been on the fence about eating healthier
to PREVENT heart disease
(maybe it's in your family so you know you're at risk) , then now is the time to make that commitment to turn things around.
