The Grill Friendly Veggie Burger

When the weather gets warm, the grills get hot. Whether it’s a gathering of friends and neighbors or just a regular weeknight meal, cooking out is a summertime joy.

Veggie burgers can sometimes be a challenge on the grill, as they sometimes don’t hold together the way traditional burgers do. Not to worry. Here is your new Go-To recipe.

Maybe you don’t need 5 burgers. After grilling, freeze extra patties. You can thaw and re-heat, either in the oven or on the stovetop.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 1 cup cooked brown rice

  • 1 cup raw walnuts (or sub bread crumbs)

  • 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped (should be about 3/4 cup)

  • 1 Tbsp each chili powder blend, cumin powder, and smoked paprika

  • 1/2 tsp each sea salt and black pepper

  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 can black beans (well rinsed, drained and patted dry)

  • 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs

  • 3-4 Tbsp vegan BBQ sauce
